I had the incredible privilege of shadowing Melina, a nurse who truly exemplifies what it means to be a DAISY Nurse. From the moment I arrived, she welcomed me with open arms, taking the time to teach, guide, and support me with patience and kindness. She didn’t just show me the tasks of nursing—she showed me the heart behind it. What stood out most was her unwavering compassion for the babies and families in the NICU. She treated every infant as if they were her own—gentle, nurturing, and fiercely protective. Her care extended just as deeply to the parents, speaking to them with empathy, explaining every step with clarity, and offering comfort in their most vulnerable moments. The day I shadowed her, my clinical instructor happened to visit the unit. Without hesitation, this nurse extended the same generosity and grace, even taking time to walk my instructor through the care she was providing. She educated and inspired not only me, but also my instructor, who stayed behind just to witness more of the kind of nurse she is. My instructor was in awe, just like I was. Because of her, I feel renewed in my calling to pursue NICU and pediatrics. Her influence gave me the confidence to apply to the upcoming Horizon program, a decision I had been hesitant about until I experienced firsthand what it means to care like she does. She is an extraordinary nurse, a natural teacher, and one of the most compassionate people I’ve ever met. I am endlessly grateful for the impact she’s had on my journey, and I hope to one day become even half the nurse that she is.
