Her advocacy to do what's right for her patients and their families makes all the difference, especially when they are faced with the unknown and are looking for clarity and guidance.
In early December 2024, our hospital encountered a patient who will forever stay in the hearts and minds of all those who cared for him, and even those who didn't. It was a complex case that required fast, critical thinking and even faster action to save the patient's life. If not for the dedication and advocacy of Emily Rizzuto and Melina Wilson, the outcome would have been significantly worse. To say I'm proud of them would be an understatement. I am honored to have such knowledgeable and committed nurses working alongside me in our ICU and caring for our patients each night.
Melina, who similarly possesses the need to always learn and improve her practice, has a way of always advocating for what is best for the patient. Her priority is best practice and ensuring our patients get the best, appropriate care needed. Her advocacy to do what's right for her patients and their families makes all the difference, especially when they are faced with the unknown and are looking for clarity and guidance. It is sometimes a conflicting time for our patients' families to do what it right in the moment but having the information and resources presented by a caring heart such as Melina's makes the navigation a little easier in the most difficult of times.
I nominate both these nurses, Emily Rizzuto and Melina Wilson, for the beloved DAISY Award, as both of them played a critical role in the care of the patient and made the difference that gave him a fighting chance to survive and gave the family the opportunity of more time with him. They continue to impress me with the compassionate, competent, and exceptional care that all our nurses strive to achieve, and they are truly an asset to SNHMC, especially our ICU team. They truly make a difference not only for our patients and their families but also for our staff. They put the patients first and learn from each case to improve themselves for their next patient. They are the nurses you want at your loved one's bedside in time of need and the coworkers you want beside you during the most difficult shifts. I thank them for the hearts they possess, as they were truly meant to be nurses. Melina and Emily are truly worthy of such praise and recognition.
