We had a very tragic birth recently. A baby with non life sustaining heart anomalies was admitted to the NICU. This patient's family is from a different culture and we weren't sure of how everything would play out. It was just sad. The parents could not come to the NICU for some time due to the mom's condition. Melinda, as the admitting nurse, took it upon herself to show this precious girl love and compassion. She treated this baby with the kindness and empathy she would show her own family. All of this while providing top notch care. The family, when they were finally able to visit their baby even stated that they appreciated the demonstrated love their daughter was getting. Melinda's coworkers and clinical team leader were moved by her actions. The entire POD was in or close to tears. I am proud of all the nurses I work with, but it is actions like this that remind me why we do what we do. Why we are nurses. We provide care, but we love at the same time. My pride for Melinda is unmeasurable and my respect is infamous. I am touched by her actions.
