There was a very sick patient on our unit that had a long length of stay. At one point, we were uncertain he would survive at all, and emotions were high. The patient made progress and was able to get to a point where he was more awake and interactive. 

Unfortunately, as he made progress, the patient and family had voiced some significant concerns about staff and the treatment they received. The tension returned but for different reasons. Melissa got involved. She very easily could have come with an attitude of placing blame on a staff member. I don’t know what was said, but following her interaction with the patient and family, it was easier to provide care for this patient. 

The next day, Melissa also brought in a military token for the patient. Somehow, during her conversation that stemmed from accusations, she was able to make a connection with this patient as a person. Military tokens hold a great deal of honor in their exchange amongst veterans, and this patient found joy and a renewed sense of self receiving this gift. Her interaction helped us all regain trust in caring for this patient. She leads by example with her compassion. A true leader advocating for patients and her staff.
