Melissa took great care to clean this patient from head to toe, gently and with great compassion.
One shift, a nursing home patient arrived at our very busy emergency room. The patient was soiled, had dirty matted hair, and a large pressure ulcer that went down to the bone on the coccyx. This patient had been healthy and ambulatory one year before but had a stroke rendering her immobile, nonverbal, contracted, and breathing from a tracheostomy. Melissa helped to settle this patient (who was not assigned to her) even though she had a full patient assignment of her own. She made sure that her patients were stable and made time to completely clean and reposition the new nursing-home patient. Melissa took great care to clean this patient from head to toe, gently and with great compassion. This was not her patient. Melissa went as far as to obtain supplies seldom used in the ED, such as a shampoo cap from other units, massaged the patient's scalp, brushed, and braided her hair. Nurse Almeida spoke kindly to the patient throughout. This act of true kindness was heartwarming to see, and I believe she should be recognized for her competent, complete, and compassionate care. I would want her to be my nurse.
