Melissa will advocate for what's best for the patient despite the many obstacles that she ends up facing.
Recently, Melissa assisted in identifying cardiogenic shock in a patient on the PCU line. She helped to escalate this patient to have a device placed to assist in improving cardiac output. Cath lab was called in and she proceeded to remain with the patient in the cath lab, assisting with setting up the device, working with the reps, coordinating closely with the cath lab team and doctor. While there were complications, this nurse fought to try to get a new device brought to the hospital.
Ultimately it was decided to transfer the patient to another facility. Melissa stayed with the patient for hours to help with an unexpected complication. She then proceeded to follow the patient to the ICU to help get her stabilized for the transfer that was planned. She worked closely with the house supervisor to follow up about the transfer all while staying bedside with the very critically ill patient to make sure there were no additional complications. During this time, Melissa continuously educated and consoled the patient's family member who was present.
When there were complications with the transfer, she offered to ride over with the patient in the transport vehicle and manage the patient at the other facility. When the transport fell through, she stayed late to make sure the patient was stabilized. She followed up with the bedside nurse and the house supervisor from home throughout the night.
She always shows an incredible level of compassion for every one of her patients. Melissa will advocate for what's best for the patient despite the many obstacles that she ends up facing. She never gives up, always goes “above and beyond” her normal duties, and she fights constantly to put policies in place and improve current policies to ensure the patients get the best and safest care. Nurses like this one help create meaningful lasting change and improve patient outcomes.
Note: This is Melissa's 2nd DAISY Award!
