Melissa had the opportunity to provide education to a patient and family regarding end of life and living wills.  She accompanied the physician on rounds to see her patient who was having multiple falls at home, extensive cardiac history, and was on Coumadin.  The physician spoke to the patient and family about "DNR" while in the hospital and then decisions for home (discharge).  Her husband was the caretaker and he was not well.  Melissa was able to answer their questions about the DNR and also living will options and where they can get what they needed.  This was done under the supervision of the primary nurse.  Melissa did a great job with a difficult topic.  She was very knowledgeable, compassionate, and professional.  The family had a better understanding and felt comfortable signing DNR paperwork.  Melissa's nursing instructor received positive feedback from the family and primary nurse regarding her patient care.
