Melissa possesses an extraordinary talent beyond the technical aspects of her occupation and medical care of patients. Her talent is that ability to interact with all patients regardless of age, gender, and medical condition in a very personally concerned and empathic way as she would for her family.
She epitomizes humanitarianism that transcends customary nursing that can be attested by one patient in particular. After an elderly female patient was settled into a wheelchair for discharge, she reached up toward Melissa with open arms and gave her an emotional and longing hug in thanks for her care. It was one of those touching moments that made one’s eyes misty at witnessing nursing beyond conventional credos and banners of healthcare. While Melissa’s talent may not be unique among other nurses, she gives from the heart with a personality that is noticeable and recognized by her patients.
As a volunteer in the Pre-Op unit, I am able to see the personal care all the nurses extend toward their patients and visitors. Each one has her special attention to nursing by her personality and duties, and is a valuable member of DMC healthcare. However at the time, I feel Melissa is exceptional and deserves special recognition for a DAISY Award.
