We had a patient that was withdrawn from ECMO on our unit. It happened late in the day, falling on night shift to finish the final care a nurse gives. Receiving the news on their day off, Melissa and Tami who cared for this patient, came in and took over for the bedside nurses that withdrew care - allowing them to go home knowing their patient was in good hands after a long, emotional day. A kind act with zero hesitations.

Sometimes, the care that nurses give during the passing of a patient can be the kindest, most selfless gift; one that is remembered most by our families and fellow nurses. They not only took care of the patient and his family but their colleagues. A beautiful example of nursing and teamwork.
