Words truly can not express how thankful we are for Melissa, who treated my dad with dignity and respect.
Melissa was one of many nurses who provided outstanding care while my dad was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit. On Sunday, Melissa contacted me and asked when my mom and I would be coming out to the hospital. Melissa shared that my dad's hemoglobin was low and that the doctor was with my dad. I knew that my dad would soon be deciding whether he was going to continue treatment or receive comfort care. I asked Melissa if it would be okay for me to take my mom to church before we came out to the hospital. She assured me that the doctor would be available when we came. Even though my mom was not Melissa's patient, I believe Melissa recognized my mom's spiritual need to turn her worries over to God. After arriving at the hospital, Melissa contacted the doctor (who was also extremely compassionate). Melissa also set up a virtual visit with the nephrologist. I feel Melissa was a true hero when she advocated for my dad. My dad did not want to go on dialysis. Melissa patiently woke my dad up. She stood by my dad's bedside. She restated the questions the doctor asked. She repeated what my dad said because he was difficult to understand.

After the meeting, Melissa stayed in the room. Melissa answered our questions about hospice. She shared additional information. While my dad slept, Melissa quietly removed my dad from the equipment. We knew he would soon be leaving ICU and transitioning to hospice care. Words truly can not express how thankful we are for Melissa, who treated my dad with dignity and respect. We appreciate all the above and beyond care she provided. One kindness that will always be remembered is Melissa washing and brushing my dad's hair. Although this seems so silly, my mom was thrilled to see the man whom she had married for 59 years look good. Before we left that afternoon, my mom kissed my dad goodbye and stood by his side, running her hands through his hair.
