Melissa Kunz 2, BSN, RN

Melissa volunteered to take care of a patient whose infant was actively passing. She held the patient's hand, sat by her side, and supported her. Every time the patient went to speak, she looked at Melissa, and Melissa said, "It is ok; you can say it." She showed empathy and helped these parents navigate the unthinkable. She listened and asked for support for this family as needs arose. She set aside her personal feelings and judgment as the parents ultimately decided to leave before the patient passed. She stayed with this baby until she passed so she would not be alone. She responded without judgment and instead focused on the patient and what she needed.

Her impact was felt by the family and the entire team. Many caregivers reached out to express that she was incredible as she helped this family walk a lonely path and navigate their grief. This is a very heavy space, and it is not uncommon for people to shy away from it because of the tangible grief.
