Mayo Clinic Health System is fortunate to have two outstanding staff members on the SWWI team. Amy Berns, R.N., and Melissa Schier, L.P.N., cared for a woman during her OB appointment. The patient had a medical emergency during the appointment, which the doctor and Amy immediately recognized as life-threatening.

Amy called EMS for an emergent transfer to a local hospital. Melissa also cared for the patient and maintained their dignity by covering them. Amy contacted the nursing department at the local hospital’s OB department. Amy’s quick thinking and effective communication prepared their staff for emergent surgery. Upon arriving at the hospital, the doctor, the surgeon, and the OB team were prepared to perform an emergency procedure. Due to the knowledge and expertise skills of these staff members, they played a vital role in saving the life of the mother and her baby.

Amy has a decade of OB experience, and Melissa has multiple years of ICU and Emergency Department experience. Kudos to both nurses as they handled this highly stressful situation gracefully.
