Melissa Mendez strongly advocated for one of her patients. She demonstrated professionalism, nursing excellence and strong interprofessional communication for safe patient care. Her patient was status post debridement by surgery for a right lower extremity wound and was scheduled to be discharged to home. Melissa performed a comprehensive assessment of the patient, and her wound and expressed concern that the planned discharge was unsafe. She correctly escalated her concerns. Subsequently, the patient is being immediately scheduled for further surgery today.
