My husband was in the ICU with a collapsed lung secondary to his idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (complications from his forceful coughing). Being a retired RN, I was with him most of the time, observed care and part of his plan of care advocate. My husband and I were well informed of his condition and its terminal outcome. We found his care to be superb, treated with dignity and respect by the entire staff.
However, on one particular challenging day and his condition seemed to be deteriorating, we were blessed with a nurse who met the challenge. Melissa entered; she conveyed compassion, care, and the desire to be able to help us communicate most effectively with the doctors for his comfort in a holistic manner. She truly listened with her heart and mind, conveyed to us understanding, compassion, and treated us with total respect and dignity. After spending time with us, she took all information and translated it professionally to the doctors.
My husband had several long hospital admissions the past 10 years and I have never been treated this superbly. My wish is that this level of care may be given to every patient that enters your doors. He died at the hospital with tender loving care and dignity.
