As predicted, the patient quickly coded, but because of her advice, I was mentally prepared; the physician was at the bedside, and I was able to assemble my co-workers to assist with the code.
Recently, I had a patient with a diagnosis new to me — cardiac tamponade. The patient was decompensating, and I was awaiting transport to Reading Hospital via helicopter. When giving report to Melissa, I included that I had never had a tamponade patient. Melissa was super understanding and asked questions that were pertinent to the patient's status. When discussing a specific assessment finding, Melissa told me that the patient was likely going to code very soon, get my attending, and not let the helicopter crew depart until the patient was more stable. As predicted, the patient quickly coded, but because of her advice, I was mentally prepared; the physician was at the bedside, and I was able to assemble my co-workers to assist with the code. Not only did Melissa help me foresee the cardiac arrest, but when she hadn’t heard from me to finish the report, she checked in to make sure I was okay. Melissa definitely made a difference in patient care while educating a less experienced ICU nurse!
