August 2019 Honoree
melissa peavey, RN
I went to the VA clinic regarding concern about my husband. My husband didn't know I went to the clinic. I told Melissa how concerned I was, the reasons, and that I am not a worrier. Melissa took the time to listen to me. She asked me questions, she made eye contact which told me she was not only listening but truly thinking possibly something else was going on. Melissa stated she would read back over my husband's reports. Keeping what I said, "was not his pattern", and contact his provider. Melissa also was going to request pain meds to keep my husband comfortable. Much transpired when I went back, I took my husband in to see Melissa. We went back home and we received a call to go to the local hospital. Eventually, our son came to town and transported my husband to the VA hospital. He had CAT Scans and the diagnosis was cancer. Wonderful care at VA facility. Arrangements made to bring him back to the hospice in the town where we live. Blessed that VA social services worked with the doctors here to accept my husband. He lived only a few days. If it wasn't for Melissa, none of this would have happened.
Thank you, Melissa, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
