My husband has cancer and was hospitalized on his birthday. Two days later, Melissa was his nurse. She realized he had just had his 62nd birthday. She found a blue ribbon and pinned it on him, offering a "Happy Belated Birthday!" That was very sweet and just tickled him. A few hours later, Melissa came to get him up for a walk. She invited me to come along. We walked down the hall to a room that had been decorated in a beach theme; music was playing and there was a plate with ice cubes arranged in the shape of a cake (he could only have liquids)! We couldn't believe she did this just for him. He tells everyone about his beach birthday party. For my husband and I, Melissa reflects everything a good nurse should be - kind, considerate, helpful and patient, with the ability to see a need ahead and act on it. Our family is very thankful and feels blessed to have had her as our nurse. She took a very hard time and brought a ray of sunshine to his day.
