Melissa De Vera received 7 nominations for our inaugural DAISY Awards from both faculty and 2 cohort of students .
From Student: Prof. De Vera is always looking out for my classmates and me. She cheers us not only at clinical but also every day in class. She knows how to develop a course curriculum that not only challenges us but also creates an environment where we feel seen, valued, and capable, even during the most challenging moments. She's consistent and compassionate, always advocating for us students, even in our other classes. She finds ways to relate to us and considers the adversities in our lives, adapting her teaching and support to better support her students. I feel comfortable and confident when she is behind my nursing career. I opened up about my dad having parkinsons, which I didn't tell most people. She supported my emotional and academic challenges while dealing with my dad. I can't thank her enough.

She's been a huge role model who exemplifies what it means to be a well-rounded nurse and educator. She literally does not judge and just wants to help us succeed.

From faculty: Prof DeVera embodies the highest standards of nursing academia. As a new faculty and clinical instructor, I have been incredibly fortunate to be under her mentorship; she has generously shared her expertise and guided me through the complexities of this transition. She is remarkably patient, kind and intelligent, maintaining a "firm & fair" approach that is highly respected by her students and all faculty. Her impact is most evident during our work together in the skills lab and simulations. While instructing her students on complex tasks, she demonstrates a level of excellence that serves as a masterclass for both her students and her fellow faculty. During one of their skills lab days, I watched her spend extra time with a struggling student, not just repeating the steps of the procedure but explaining "WHY' behind the intervention until the student truly found their confidence. She creates a safe learning environment where both students and faculty are empowered to ask questions and grow. Her genuine care for her nursing students and staff makes her an exceptional role model and a true asset to the nursing profession. Her influence extends far beyond the classrooms; she is shaping the next generation of nurses while simultaneously elevating the standards of her peers.
