Melissa significantly impacted my mother’s care and my family’s experience during a challenging time. Her compassion, communication, and emotional support demonstrate her commitment to patient-centered care and nursing.
My mother has been admitted twice in the past few weeks to Northwell Health. She required two ICU stays and, upon stabilization of her medical conditions, was transferred to 5 Tower. Her intensive care stays and medical conditions were very traumatic and stressful to my family. At one time, we were told we might lose her. My family and I have been grieving her illness and the poor outcomes of her medical conditions. During the stay, my mother was accepted into the home hospice care.
During both admissions to 5 Tower, Melissa cared for my mother. I want to take this opportunity to nominate Melissa for the DAISY Award. Melissa kept my mother, family, and me at the center of care. I informed Melissa that I am a nurse practitioner, and we worked as a team in my mother’s care. This was as simple as allowing me to do all the activities of daily hygiene care and changing my mother’s linen. While I am a health care professional, many staff disregard this and exclude me from assisting in basic care.
Melissa always had warm greetings. She consistently provided clear and informative communication about my mother’s care, such as how her night went, physician and nursing plan of the day, which was important, especially during this challenging situation. Melissa’s efforts in keeping us informed helped set my expectations for the day and contributed to my sense of trust, partnership, feeling informed and supported.
I appreciated Melissa’s compassionate and emotional presence during my mother's stay.
As mentioned above, my family and I had a long, stressful, and emotionally distressing few weeks, and it was Melissa’s compassionate care and emotional presence that I appreciated most. As mentioned above, my family and I had a long, stressful, and emotionally distressing few weeks that made all the difference each day. Her morning greetings, treating us with kindness, empathizing, emotional and medical support, and sharing a hug with me at the end of my visit mattered the most every time I visited my mother. Her actions lessened my emotional burden, and I knew my mother was in the best hands and receiving care.
