Melissa was working as an extra RN in outpatient services becuase they were very busy on that day. A pediatric patient was sent over from their doctor's office for IV antibiotics. This child looked very sick so Melissa called the doctor's office to see if a chest x-ray could be ordered. The x-ray looked terrible and the child needed to be admitted. Melissa suggested that the child be transferred to the nearest pediatric speciality hospital. Melissa then assisted with the transfer. The child required surgery and a chest tube.

Because Melissa was so persistent in getting this child the care she needed, she is doing much better. The child's mom was so grateful that someone finally listened and got her daughter the help she needed. This little girl might not be here today if it were not for Melissa being a patient advocate.
