I didn't have to say a word; she just knew I was scared. Her big, gentle, kind eyes locked into mine, and the message was very clear—“You are going to be okay—we do this every day—we've got you."
To say this particular Monday is a day I will never forget but also a day I wish never happened would be an understatement. I was getting about my day, and a strange feeling took over - I knew something was terribly wrong and ended up in a critical situation in the ER. I was scared and I was pretty sure this was the curtains for me, as I was hurried back to the room and a swarm of caregivers went to work.
Despite the chaos and high-pressure environment this nurse made an immediate connection with me and was so very kind. I didn't have to say a word, she just knew I was scared. Her big, gentle, kind eyes locked into mine and the message was very clear - “you are going to be okay - we do this every day - we've got you." A lot went on in a very short time and she was there the entire time, holding my hand, a gentle pat on my arm all the while the message relayed “we got you". She was also very aware of the anxiety that my family was experiencing as we were all walking through the unknown. Her ability to connect with them and provide reassurance, support and comfort during this incredibly stressful time was remarkable. Her compassion helped to alleviate their anxiety and a bond of trust was immediately formed which isn't always easy to do.
My encounter with this nurse was brief, but it is clear to me that she is committed to the comfort and well-being of her patients. She is an outstanding nurse and person. Any patient who has her as their nurse is lucky. I wholeheartedly recommend this nurse for a DAISY Award. In a world where people are not recognized for their efforts often enough, this would serve as a testimony to the remarkable care provided by this nurse and the entire ER team that saved my life.
