I am deeply grateful for her willingness to go above and beyond, from the initial trauma to post-surgery.
My 19-year-old son was rushed to the hospital by ambulance after a severe car accident. Upon arrival, he was immediately seen by the trauma unit due to concerns about his injuries. While conscious, he was clearly in shock and became fixated on the fact that his favorite pants had been cut off and that his shirt would likely be cut as well. He grew increasingly stressed and agitated.
Throughout this, Missy was an incredible source of support. She calmly explained each step of the process to him, helping to ease his shock. When he became emotional over his shirt, nearly in tears, Missy gently stepped in with a reassuring “mom” tone, promising they would do everything they could to save it, and assured him that he would be okay. She took the extra time and care to safely remove the shirt without damaging it. While this may seem small, it meant the world to my son. Missy also made sure to keep me informed, explaining each step.
Having never been to this hospital before and having heard less-than-positive reviews, I was initially anxious. However, Missy’s calm demeanor, thorough communication, and genuine care for my son immediately put me at ease. She never dismissed my many questions, and watching her treat my son with such compassion brought me some peace during an incredibly intense and frightening time. I didn’t expect to see Missy again, but I was fortunate to encounter her the following day when she continued to be a tremendous support. At that time, I was frustrated with delays in my son’s care and had stepped outside to call family.
When I saw Missy, I thanked her for the care she had provided the day before, and she immediately inquired about my son's surgery. When I shared that it had been delayed and we were uncertain when it would happen, Missy expressed concern and promised to follow up with the appropriate staff. Within 30 minutes, we received an update that he was going into surgery and would receive the care he needed. I don’t know if it was Missy’s attention and advocacy that made the difference, or if it was just good timing, but what I do know is that she is one of the few people who truly listened to me during this incredibly stressful time. Her care, both for my son and for me, brought much-needed relief.
I am deeply grateful for her willingness to go above and beyond, from the initial trauma to post-surgery. Nurses like Missy make a significant difference in healthcare, and I believe she deserves recognition for her outstanding care and compassion.
