She checked on him often to make sure he was comfortable, not in pain, and not anxious about what was to come, as my dad had a DNR.
My father was a patient at Beebe on a regular floor. He was transferred to the ICU for rectal bleeding. My father was battling late-stage lung cancer. My mother was also a patient at Beebe on a regular floor at the time. When the family arrived, my father had been in the ICU for several hours, and the staff had gone through a shift change at 7 am. We arrived shortly thereafter. Melody was my dad's RN. She was very attentive to him and the family. She explained everything that was going on and what the doctor had told my dad. Making sure the family was comfortable and had everything they needed. She made sure Dad was comfortable and all his needs were met. She and the CNA cleaned him up several times, including twice within 5 minutes. She checked on him often to make sure he was comfortable, not in pain, and not anxious about what was to come, as my dad had a DNR. As his condition deteriorated, she explained to the family what the numbers on the machine meant, what to look for, and what to expect as time continued. She made sure my mother was able to come from her room, on another floor, down to the ICU to sit with dad. Mom did have to go back to her room for her own treatment. But assured mom that she would personally come get mom if it looked like dad was slipping away. She did make sure that happened. Melody didn't call for another nurse or assistant to get mom; she did it herself. Melody was a knowledgeable, caring, and compassionate nurse. She went way above her job description to make our family and my dad's stay as good as it could be. Our family is very thankful to have had such a wonderful RN taking care of our loved one while he was at Beebe.
