I was the supervisor one night and a unit had a problem with placing a foley on a patient. Melody came to help even though she was the Charge RN and had a student with her. It took us about an hour to get a new foley in as we had to insert it with the patient lying on her side. This is just one of the many times she has demonstrated great leadership, was a team player, displayed critical thinking and was able to teach other nurses including me!
***
She demonstrates critical thinking with her excellent report exchange (asks questions) and also as preceptor I have noted her guiding immersion students and orientees. She is also an excellent critical thinker as evidenced by her role as an RRT and with any emergent situations in the ICU. She is very respectful to patients and families with her interactions and extends herself to meet the patients' needs. Even after report, she will take a patient to CT scans or call MDs/consultants if the patient's condition deteriorates at the change of shift. She was chair of the EBP committee and won a scholarship for her hyperkalemia project completed at ROPH. As a charge nurse/RRT nurse or as a nurse at the bedside, she demonstrates flexibility in her role to accommodate the patients' acuity. If we are short staffed, she takes an extra load upon herself. If unable to get extra staff she considers the consensus of her peers and gives choices to buy staff cooperation.
