Melody Li, BSN, RN
While every nurse we encountered at El Camino Hospital was wonderful, Melody raised the bar in every situation to achieve true exceptionalism. She embodied that perfect blend of compassion and competence you hope to find in a nurse during one of the most challenging periods; you never felt rushed in her presence, even as she moved with precision and efficiency.
One of my first experiences with this was during a catheter insertion; Melody was extremely respectful but quick and expert in her movements, making the process smooth and painless. (Having been through this many times before, I can attest that this is not always the case!)
When sudden bouts of diarrhea occurred during Melody’s shift, she monitored the situation closely and kept me informed regularly about consultations with my internist about possible bacterial concerns and patiently explained why my family eventually needed to don gowns and gloves.
She also walked by my side down the hallway for several minutes to my new private room assignment with such good cheer that it felt like we could have just been going for a daytime stroll (albeit with someone who kept a close eye on my safety every step of the way)!
Needless to say, her exceptionally upbeat attitude made an otherwise stressful experience so much more pleasant than I would have expected, even in a place with such talented care staff as El Camino Hospital.
Finally, Melody went above and beyond in making everyone around her feel as welcome and informed as she could. My family was so impressed by her combination of professionalism, acumen, and gentleness, and she stayed on top of every detail without ever missing a beat.
We could not recommend her more highly for this award – and though we know many candidates will be considered, we are forever thankful to have come across someone as deserving of winning it as Melody is.
