Nominated by Faculty: "Mercede went above and beyond to connect with a Spanish speaking only inmate, to seek additional assistance, and to make a human connection with him. The inmate shared that she was the first one who took the time to care about his situation, and that prior to Mercede intervening, he had not had anyone speak to him about what was happening or what was going to happen in his case. She was able to use appropriate, professional, therapeutic communication, utilize the language line, and communicate with multiple interdisciplinary team members to bring this inmate up to speed on his situation. I applaud her efforts and am incredibly proud of the way that she was intentional about treating "the least of these" as someone very important." Mercede was in her Community Health rotation completing her nursing clinicals at a local County Jail in the healthcare area.
