"Merc the Nurse Saves the Day!" A code gray was called regarding an uncooperative patient. Upon arriving to assist, I saw a naked 4-year-old sitting on the floor. There were a lot of people around, primarily to keep the patient safe. The child was very upset and would not cooperate with any requests. Merc had done the preop on the patient and came over and sat on the floor with him, trying to coax him over to the gurney. She asked him what he wanted and what would help him. The patient wanted a cheeseburger. Merc got him the cheeseburger and got him to cooperate. She then took over his care after he was given ketamine and took him to an isolation room to complete his recovery. Merc really turned this situation around by relating to the patient and helping to keep him safe for the duration of his stay. A couple of hours later, a dressed 4-year-old, holding his mother's hand, walked out of the PACU isolation room--after happily eating his cheeseburger!
