I would like to recognize Mercedes for the extraordinary compassion, clinical skill, and quick thinking she demonstrated during a frightening emergency.

While working as our unit's charge nurse, Mercedes immediately recognized that a patient on our unit was choking and unable to breathe. Without hesitation, she acted calmly and confidently, performing the Heimlich maneuver and successfully dislodging the obstruction. Her rapid response and professional judgment prevented what could have become a tragic outcome.

What stood out most was not only her lifesaving intervention, but also the compassion and reassurance she provided throughout the incident. Even under pressure, Mercedes remained calm, focused, and comforting to both the patient and everyone involved. Her actions reflected the highest standards of nursing excellence and patient advocacy.

Mercedes went far beyond routine care that day. Her ability to stay composed during a critical situation demonstrated exceptional clinical expertise, courage, and dedication to patient safety. Because of her swift actions, a patient was able to recover safely and avoid serious harm.

I am deeply grateful for the care, professionalism, and humanity Mercedes showed. She is truly deserving of recognition through the DAISY Award and serves as an outstanding example of what nursing excellence looks like every day.
