My mom was in the ER and we could not wake her up. They moved her to the third floor. When she was stable, they moved her to 5 South. I've been with Mama the whole time. She couldn't speak and I was scared. Then I met Mercedes who calmed me, re-focused me, and explained that Mama had a monitor and she and the rest of the nurses would be watching for the smallest changes. I hadn't slept for a while until Mercedes explained everything. She allowed me to be a part of Mama's care, so I can have peace of mind and rest. Mama's eyes light up when she sees Mercedes. From the first moment we met her, she was so caring and compassionate. She takes the time no other person has done. She's respectful, understanding, and her knowledge goes way beyond nursing. She is so dedicated to us. Mercedes comes no matter how many times I call her. She talks with Mama, on her level, not at her like so many other people do. Mama's diagnosis is still in question, but the knowledge and care from Mercedes never will be. She has the heart of an angel and has made the biggest difference. She was there when Mama got her smile back. She sees and hears with her heart, not her eyes and ears. We love Mercedes and will forever be amazed by her.
