Mercy is the oldest full-time nurse at Jefferson Washington township hospital. She is a small but mighty PACU nurse who intends to keep working as long as she is able. At almost 83, Mercy amazes her manager by her work ethic. “For a woman of her age, she runs circles around much younger staff. I love her old school mentality and work ethic.” Mercy intends to keep working as long as he is able to care for her patients. Mercy said, “As long as I am mentally and physically able, I would love to dedicate my remaining life to taking care of patients…and helping people." Mercy is a nurse’s nurse. She is always positive, always smiling, and always busy in a good way. Mercy is always willing to switch shifts. She continues to take call on nights and weekends, meaning she is available to come in for an urgent or emergent case, the same as full-time staff half her age. She is willing to come in and cover something extra, and help her younger co-workers balance life and work. Mercy’s perspective sounds thoroughly old-school. “You get your satisfaction in life when you don’t waste your time and energy doing nothing.” Recently, PACU was heading into a staffing crisis due to holding patients in PACU while waiting on inpatient bed assignments. The first person to volunteer to stay beyond her shift to assist was Mercy, WT PACU’s energetic octogenarian.
