Being a trauma nurse for the last eight years, I never imagined that bringing my fourth baby into the world would result in me being a trauma patient myself. In what can only be explained as a freak accident, my minivan shifted out of gear when parked on our inclined driveway, knocked me down, and took me with it. I was 38 weeks pregnant and covered with severe road rash, abrasions, and a broken hand. I was rushed to Atrium Health Main for treatment and, after several hours, ended up delivering my son via emergency c-section. He was miraculously perfect, but it was one of the longest and most terrifying nights of my life.

When I woke up the next morning with only two hours of sleep, I was greeted with what can only be described as a true angel. Meredith Hatt BSN, RN, RNC-MNN was my nurse and hero for the next 48 hours. She took the time to care for me and make me feel like I was the only person in her world. She helped me walk around my room for the first time, she aided me in washing the blood and debris from my injured body, and she listened and stayed with me as I cried about everything that had occurred. She dressed my extensive wounds with more care and deliberation than any of my fellow trauma nurses ever showed. I have worked at this facility for over 10 years, and I can honestly say Meredith is a one-of-a-kind nurse. She truly embodies the Atrium Mission statement. She improved my health by advocating on my behalf between multiple disciplines. She elevated my hope- giving me confidence and advice on how I could care for myself and my son when we went home. And she advanced my healing mentally and physically as she anticipated each of my needs before I even knew I needed them. I cannot think of a nurse more deserving of the DAISY Award. Meredith's exceptional care has inspired me to be a better nurse in my own career. I hope she is recognized so she can truly know how special she is.
