Meredith developed an innovative and compassionate way to honor a loved one when they pass away. She prints one of the patient’s last heartbeats on an EKG strip. She then puts this in a small glass bottle with a tag that had the patient’s name on it. Meredith then gives the bottle to the loved ones of the patient who passed. Meredith used to pay for these bottles with her own money, but she is now reimbursed for them. I did not realize how meaningful this gift is and how wonderful it is to have this last heartbeat of your loved one. The gravity of this gift hit me when one of our ICU RNs passed in our care. Meredith copied many strips, put them in bottles and gave them to his family as well as all the staff in the ICU that wanted one. They even gave me one that I saved in my office and will cherish forever. Meredith created this so all ICU staff can do it and is sharing it with the hospital. Hopefully, this practice will go Centura-wide.
