She must have noticed that I looked afraid because she asked me if I wanted her to stay.
We would like to nominate our nurse for the amazing care, compassion, and perceptiveness she showed my husband and me as we went through delivering our stillborn son. She and the midwife turned what could have been an unbearably traumatic experience into one where we felt supported, cared for, and surrounded with compassion, even as we grieved our child. As the meds began to take effect and I started to bleed, I felt afraid due to a previous traumatic experience a year ago. She must have noticed that I looked afraid because she asked me if I wanted her to stay. I told her yes. She stayed with me through the whole process, talking about our kids, where we were from, and how we both came to be nurses. Her presence and her willingness to just be with us and talk brought us so much comfort as we prepared to deliver. As my bleeding and contractions increased, she was calm and steady, coaching me through the process, even when the midwife wasn't in the room. When our son finally came, I will always remember the quiet in the room. Not the solemn silence of loss, but a quiet, calm compassion surrounding our son and us. It was exactly what I needed. The time, care, and heart Merideth gave us in those hours will stay with us forever. She helped us begin the path toward healing, and we cannot imagine having gone through this without the care and compassion she showed us. For her extraordinary compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism, we wholeheartedly nominate Merideth for this Award.
