I had the opportunity to see Mia in action, be compassionate, and care for one of her patients in particular. The patient just got diagnosed with terminal cancer and had days to live. You would never have known that Mia had five other patients in her assignment. She spent one-on-one time with the patient and family and offered empathy and sat with the family to help them through the transition.
The family was undecided on whether going to hospice or not. Mia offered the utmost display of what a nurse should be compassion, empathy, caring and was a great communicator of keeping the family in the loop of everything. When the physician walked in, she was there to assist the family and re-communicate any questions they had. The family requested a priest for the last rites, and she was able to attain a priest to come in so that the patient could have the last rites.
Mia was there every step of the way for the family and the patient. She stood by their side and answered any questions she could up to the minute the patient left the unit with hospice. I am so very proud to have the opportunity to have seen Mia in action. She truly cares about her patients and goes above and beyond to keep them comfortable. She explained what every medication and treatment was for. She is truly an awesome nurse!
