August 2026 Honoree
Mia Richards, BSN, RN
Mia is a new graduate nurse who began her career in August, and in a short amount of time, she has already demonstrated an exceptional ability to care not only for her patients’ medical needs but for their emotional and spiritual well-being. She understands that healing goes far beyond treating symptoms. It involves caring for the whole person.
One of Mia’s first patients off orientation was an elderly woman who lived at home with her daughter. The patient had experienced a frightening episode where she became unresponsive, leading to her hospitalization. Throughout her stay, there was ongoing frustration and uncertainty, as the care team struggled to determine the exact cause of the episode. This uncertainty began to take a toll on the patient. Though she had a naturally spunky and vibrant personality, her sparkle began to fade under the weight of fear and unanswered questions.
Recognizing this change, Mia took it upon herself to bring light back into her patient’s day. In an extraordinary act of kindness, she created a “mini spa day” right there in the hospital room. Mia brought in her own supplies and spent time sitting with the patient, engaging in genuine conversation while giving her a manicure and painting her nails. This was more than a simple gesture. It was a moment of dignity, normalcy, and human connection.
The impact was immediate. The patient beamed with pride, eagerly showing off her freshly painted nails to everyone who entered the room. For a time, Mia helped her feel like herself again.
The following day, as the patient prepared for discharge, she experienced another episode that resulted in a Code Stroke. In the midst of fear, confusion, and urgency, it was Mia that the patient turned to. Because of the trust and connection Mia had built, the patient found comfort in her presence during one of the most critical and frightening moments of her care.
Mia Richards exemplifies the true spirit of nursing. Her ability to connect, to uplift, and to provide compassionate care in both the quiet and critical moments is remarkable. Especially so early in her career. She reminds us all that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness leave the most lasting impact.
