Mia was the one I turned to each day to help motivate myself.
Mia Wideman is an awesome nurse. She knows how to take care of her patients, and I will be happy if I come back to this hospital to have her as my nurse.

I was a patient on the colon surgical floor during the month of September. I was only supposed to be in the hospital for around four days and stayed a month due to complications. It has been over 15 years since I had been in a hospital and I was not dealing well with the diagnosis of cancer. It can be humiliating to depend upon strangers to help you use the bathroom and clean yourself. I was upset, hurt and angry at the world. Mia took the time to listen to me and never made me feel humiliated. She wiped me, washed me, and dressed me and never made me feel embarrassed. Her goal was to help me get up and walk to get home as soon as possible! All the while, without making me angry. Mia was the one I turned to each day to help motivate myself. She made me feel like family. In fact, the whole floor of employees made me feel like family. The nurse's aides are amazing also. They walked with me daily. This floor has an amazing staff!!

In September, my mother (who was 103 at the time) underwent emergency surgery for a twisted intestine at Roper Hospital. Needless to say, it took a while for her to recover. Early on, Mia Wideman was her nurse and recognized an emergent breathing problem. She was quick to call respiratory therapy, averting a major disaster (which at my mother's age could have been fatal). She showed incredible compassion for my mother who was struggling in her recovery. My mother turned 104 in the hospital, and Mia came in on her day off to sing Happy Birthday and bring her a present. Happily, and thanks in no small part to Mia, my mother is now home continuing her recovery. Mia is an Extraordinary Nurse and an exceptional human being. Patients who have her as their nurse are indeed lucky and will get outstanding care.
