If Bailey had not acted so quickly, the inmate would have died from exsanguination.
Michael Bailey responded to an emergent situation in medical - even though he was on pill pass in the building. When he heard call for an ambulance on the radio - he immediately headed to medical. On his way he noted seeing a trail of blood all the way to the treatment room. The charge nurse and other staff that were in medical were working on the patient and applying pressure to the bleeding area and trying to find the source of the bleed - but it was still pulsing out of his mouth. This patient had been cut on the outside of his cheek-into his mouth- to the back of his throat puncturing his carotid artery.

Michael Bailey felt for the bleed going through the patient’s cheek to the back of his throat where he found the pulsing. He then used his fingers to occlude the hole with pressure while waiting on EMS to arrive. Once they were onsite - he rode in the back of the ambulance all the way to the hospital occluding this bleed. If he had not acted so quickly the patient would have died from exsanguination. I feel like this is an exemplary example of an outstanding nurse who not only jumped into action to save a life- but continued that care all the way to the hospital to ensure the patient received the best care possible.  It is stories like these that do not make it out to the public so they can see what extraordinary nurses we have in the Virginia Department of Corrections.
