My husband was admitted to 3W tele after suffering a medical event at home. He was still somewhat confused when we reached 3W. He mostly slept when we first arrived on the day shift. Mike came on pm shift and immediately began forming a relationship with my husband. He sat on his bed, took his hand and insisted that he repeat back to him all the info he had been given, that he would stay in bed, not get up alone and use his call light to ask for help. Mike maintained eye contact with my husband and lightly touched him on the shoulder when he was talking to him. This approach made all of the difference to him and to me. For the first time since the medical event, I felt that my husband would be well taken care of and that I could go home and know he would be safe.
I have known Mike for a number of years and I know that patients like his approach to their care but I did not know why until now. Since I have worked with Mike I know that he is also very knowledgeable and that his years of experience have made him an excellent RN. I was impressed with Mike's emphasis on keeping his patient safe as well as his compassion and appropriate communication in my husband's vulnerable state.
Mike made a positive connection that set the tone for my husband's hospital stay and put him on the path towards healing.
Thank you, Mike!
