... I had a endoscopic endonasal approach surgery to remove a pituitary tumor. Mike was my night nurse during my entire stay at Presby and made a huge difference in my experiences. Naturally the thought of brain surgery scared me. In addition, I was in severe pain that could only be partially controlled. During the day my husband's presence helped me to stay calm and to cope with what felt like an overwhelming situation. Night time was a different story. Alone and unable to sleep my anxiety would nearly get the best of me. I was so thankful to have Mike as my nurse. Not only was he responsive but he always took the time to explain things to me and answer my questions. More importantly, he treated me like an individual not just another body in bed. He talked to me and shared a little about himself with me and it felt like a real connection which is what I needed more than anything at the time.

I know first hand how busy the nurses on the neurosurgery ward are and all of my nurses provided excellent care, however Mike went above and beyond in providing care. He provided a human connection which is what I needed the most. He is an excellent nurse and I think he exemplifies the DAISY Award for providing a remarkable experience.
