June 2026 Honoree
Michael England, RN
Mike has worked for the MercyOne Mason City team for 10 years as a nurse. Throughout that time, he has demonstrated an unwavering dedication to our home care team in countless ways.
Most recently, Mike stepped up to assist our MercyOne Des Moines Home Care team last fall and winter when we experienced a significant resignation of nursing staff in the Des Moines market while simultaneously preparing for our Joint Commission survey. At that time, the Des Moines Home Care team simply did not have any extra staff to spare.
I asked Mike if he would be willing to travel to the Newton area three days each week to manage our Newton territory. Mike readily accepted the challenge, taking over a critical service area for the Des Moines market and immediately assuming responsibility for a 20-patient caseload.
For two months, Mike drove 140 miles to the Newton market every week, often in difficult weather conditions. On one particularly severe weather day, I called Mike to tell him to stay in Mason City, but I was too late. He informed me that he had already taken the back roads and was nearly to Newton.
While supporting the Newton territory, Mike attended weekly case conference meetings, worked closely with the therapists and home health aides, and collaborated with Chris Moore, RN, Clinical Manager. By the end of his assignment, both the patients and staff wanted him to stay.
Mike maintained excellent communication with the entire team, and patients consistently complimented the outstanding care they received from him.
In addition to this extraordinary commitment, Mike frequently volunteers to complete weekend admissions so we can meet our timely initiation of care requirements. He also assists with the orientation of new nurses, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of caregivers.
Mike is a true team player and an invaluable member of our MercyOne/THAH family.
