What Mike did to support the teams during this critical and complex situation is really nothing short of amazing.
This is overdue. I had intended to write this immediately after the event. There was an adult code blue in the Mother Baby unit. Mike Gilbertson, RN was the Administrative Nursing Supervisor working that day. What Mike did to support the teams during this critical and complex situation is really nothing short of amazing; except this is what he does every day. Mike immediately responded to the emergency. He showed up and began to take charge of coordinating people, supplies, and resources to support the staff and code responders. He made phone calls arranging the cath lab to be on standby, getting equipment delivered to the unit, and planning for an ICU bed placement at both United and Abbott depending on the patient outcome. Mike worked from the Mother Baby front desk to answer questions and navigate the complexities of a critical situation that our Mother Baby team was not used to being involved in. All this while continuing to manage the rest of his responsibilities such as flow and attending bed meetings. He provided emotional support with comforting words, quiet conversations, and a shoulder to cry on. He brought in social work and chaplaincy to help. Mike worked to provide up-to-date information to the providers, so they were able to keep the family informed. When it was time, he made sure that a father was able to welcome his newborn baby and that same father was able to say goodbye to his wife.
