Michael did an amazing job, and I can't say enough how proud I am of the great nurse he is turning into.
I just want to recognize Michael Martinez for doing an amazing job tonight. He does an amazing job every night but tonight was worth noting. We had a patient that came in with ABD pain and AMS. During his time taking care of the patient, he notified the doctor of critical findings, including noticing when the patient started to trend hypotensive, noting the contents after placing an NG tube was bright red blood, having a difficult time getting IV access, and recommending central line placement for the increasing critical patient, then acted quickly by taking the patient to CT for a repeat CT not even 2 minutes after the patient had a central line placed.
With this, the Doctor noted that due to the patient going to CT quickly by Michael, there was time saved to find the patient needed emergency surgery due to a worsening bowel obstruction. While in the ER and assessing the patient, the surgeon also stated that due to our quick actions and quick findings from the repeat CT, this patient’s life was saved. Later after the surgery was complete, the Doctor called and updated me on the situation of the patient. He stated that because we acted fast the way we did, the patient now has a very good prognosis and chance of survival. He was able to untwist the bowel obstruction and the patient did not have to have any section/portion of the bowel resected or removed. He also stated that if this would've been hours or possibly minutes later the patient would've died in the OR. This in my opinion is a direct correlation to Michael’s care of this patient in the ER. Michael did an amazing job, and I can't say enough how proud I am of the great nurse he is turning into.
