Mike is a phenomenal Critical Care RN, however, recently he went above and beyond to display compassion and understanding for a critically ill patient in the CCU who was mentally delayed, scared and agitated. Although the patient was intermittently agitated Mike kneeled down and got on the patient's level and spoke to him in a very calm and compassionate manner and was able to calm him down. Mike explained everything to the patient in a way he could understand. There was no staff member from the patient's group home, which made the patient even more scared and combative. Mike spent a significant amount of time with the patient to make him feel safe and secure while in the CCU. Mike also displayed teamwork when it was time to transfer the patient to the medical floor he went with the patient and stayed additional time with the receiving RN and patient to help calm him during the period of transition. I feel Mike deserves recognition for this given the circumstances surrounding the patient. It took a lot of patience, compassion, time and teamwork. Mike did this for this special patient while also caring for another and not making his other patient feel neglected.
