This year I was hospitalized at Downey PIH for 16 days. During that time, my family and I experienced extreme stress and worry. I was told I needed a very complicated surgical procedure and this news added to my concern and worry. Mike from the surgical department came to my room to discuss what to expect to myself and my family. His genuine concern and compassion during this conversation were amazing. Again, on the day of my surgery, Mike was there to calm my fears, give genuine hugs and go over and beyond his normal call of duty. Mike came out after surgery to reassure my family that I was okay, embracing them again with a genuine and compassionate hug. Mike is the human aspect of PIH, not just an employee doing his job. He goes over and beyond to make a patient feel like a member of the PIH family. I believe he is often behind the scenes and does not get recognized for his exceptional patient care.
