Michael has the ability to build strong relationships with his patients and team members providing for a therapeutic environment on the unit.
Michael Joined the Nursing leadership team at Riverview Medical Center as the Nurse Manager of the Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit in August 2019. Since Michael has arrived at Riverview he has facilitated a culture change related to patient safety on the unit. His leadership has contributed to a decline in patient safety-related events year over year.

Michael partnered with the Unit Educator and developed a Milieu Management training course that was provided to all team members. The program provided skills in the management of higher acuity behavioral health patients that are being admitted to the unit. The Milieu program is presented on an ongoing basis to allow new team members to participate in this important training. He also developed and implemented an expanded precautions tool that provided for improved team member communication regarding patient risk factors and intervention that the team can implement to ensure patient safety. Comfort rounds were also instituted on the unit for all patients identified at risk for falling by raising the team's awareness to environmental risks for this patient population. Michael has the ability to build strong relationships with his patients and team members providing for a therapeutic environment on the unit.

Changing a safety culture in a unit takes a multitude of actions and takes time to realize the outcome of the interventions. With Michael's leadership, the unit noted a 60% decrease in security calls to the unit from 2021 to 2022. The unit fall rate decreased from 3.62 in 2021 to 2.92 in 2022. The number of restraint episodes was impacted by this safety culture decreasing from 2.37 restraint use rate to 0.76 in 2022.

Michael is a leader who is proactive, innovative, and committed to increasing the safety of the unit as well as ensuring a team environment where the team is comfortable sharing their ideas, needs, and concerns. The unit noted a drastic reduction in the Registered Nursing vacancy rate noting a 5-month period with no RN vacancies. As a leader, Michael successfully manages the unit's staffing evidenced by an overall productivity rate of 105.9% for 2022.

Michael is a leader who seeks to assist others when needed. He does many tasks behind the scenes that most are not even aware of. He always steps in when needed on his unit and there is no task that is beneath him. One of the most helpful things that he does for his patients is organizing a clothing drive. This program provides patients with clean clothes as needed upon discharge. He partners with the Medical Surgical Nurse Managers to offer assistance with managing challenging behavioral health patients that are being cared for in their units. His partnership with the Emergency Department Nurse Manager has facilitated improved throughput, getting the behavioral health patient to the inpatient behavioral health unit to ensure the safest environment for this very vulnerable patient population.

It is my pleasure to nominate Michael Seeley for the DAISY Leader Award for Spring 2023.
