I wanted to let SGMC know about a very special nurse at the Cancer Center. I have been a patient of Pearlman Cancer Center for many years, during that time I have been receiving chemo treatments. Michaela is a nurse in the chemo room who always comes out and greets us with a very friendly and comforting smile. She always remembers my name and treats my family with respect. Chemo is not a fun thing to have to go through. Cancer is a horrible thief that steals experiences and even the life out of patients and their families. This nurse goes above and beyond to help make us feel special and honestly, I look forward to coming here because of people like her.
Michaela is an angel. She has assisted in directing a video that was posted on the hospital Facebook and YouTube to help raise awareness and get "Valentine Brown" on The Price is Right "Valentine Brown Come on Down!" because she knows that it is a part of my day that I look forward to watching the show and I take a break from my illness. She has come up to ICU multiple times to check on me and other family members many times on her own lunch break just to say hi. When I thought I was going to give up on fighting my cancer she came to see me in the hospital and sat at my bedside. She held my hand and reminded me that I was a fighter. She tells me that I have inspired her and helped patients find joy, but she has helped me when I have been at my weakest.
My family lights up when Michaela enters the room, she gives the best hugs and we love her like family. Not only is she kind but she is just as smart. She takes her time to explain every medicine and lab with so much detail. We are confident in her hands. I've seen her treat so many patients with the same kindness that she shows me. She remembers details like how many pillows I want what drink I might like. She asks about my puppy dog or things that I have mentioned briefly in the past just in conversation. Michaela is an extraordinary nurse because she is so personable and professional at the same time. She knows exactly how to balance being a nurse who follows the rules for her patients and still having a heart to remind you that these healthcare workers are all people. I have witnessed her bring gifts for other patients while they are receiving chemo just because they told her they were having a bad day. This is the type of nurse that others should strive to be. I want to thank her for always holding my hand during this walk!
