Michaela was C's nurse for two consecutive days in Special Care. C has been to Children's of Birmingham many times and has always received excellent care, but there was something about Michaela's caring and loving spirit that compelled me to make this nomination for the first time. C is special-needs and needs extra patience and understanding, more than the typical child. Michaela took the time to get to know C's diagnosis, her tendencies and what needed focused attention. But more importantly, Michaela took the time to get to know C as a person. So often, especially in a busy hospital, it is so easy to just go through the motions and forget there is a precious, beautiful child hidden behind an intimidating exterior that sometimes prevents him or her from walking, talking, feeding themselves and/or giving any kind of feedback. All of those apply to C. But to watch Michaela interact with C was to see her talk and play as she would with any child in her care. That is so heartening for a special-needs parent. Michaela embodies the kind of attitude, care, and empathy that any hospital would love to model. But in the case of Children's Hospital, it is especially impactful! Thank you, Michaela!!!
