Michelle has been a nurse of 3W for 16 years. She is often found going above and beyond for her patients and peers. Most recently this was demonstrated by the care she gave to one patient in particular. He was only 28 years, immunocompromised, and suffering from a complicated wound to his left ankle. Michelle was with him when he signed the consent for a below the knee amputation. She helped him navigate his emotions as he cried, expressed anger, and finally accepted what was to become his new normal. The night before his surgery, Michelle took him outside to the park across the street from the hospital where he took off his shoes and socks and walked in the grass for the last time. She then cared for him several days post op until he was safely and soundly discharged home. Before he left, he made sure to share that through many hospitalizations, he has never been treated with such respect. This is a great example of a nurse who not only cares for her patients' physical well-being, but who nurses their spirits as well.
