Michelle is always kind, compassionate, and open-minded. She is never judgmental toward patients, families, or coworkers. An amazing example of this occurred a few weeks ago. We had a patient who was here for 7 months. The patient and family could be very difficult to work with and communicate with. The patient's sons were frustrated and upset. The care management team worked hard for months to find a safe place for the patient to be discharged and finally, a facility accepted the patient. The patient and sons were nervous. The patient did not want to leave. Michelle spoke to her calmly and with the understanding that this move would be scary.
Michelle called the patient's sons and answered all of their questions as well (they had many). The patient spoke to her sons (which was recommended by Michelle) and they helped convince her that leaving the hospital was her best option. She was upset that she would not be able to see her sons once discharged to a facility. Michelle asked one of the sons to come in prior to discharge and he made it in time. The patient discharged without the need for security. There was concern she would make a scene but did not. After the patient left, the son told Michelle how grateful he was. He felt that she took the time to ease everyone's fears and answered questions in a patient and kind manner.
Michelle was on the phone multiple times reassuring the sons. The majority of her 4-hour shift in charge was spent talking to this patient and family. Without her, this complicated discharge may not have happened. The sons have called a few times to speak to Michelle since discharge. They specifically ask for her because she was so "nice." This is how Michelle interacts with people every day. She treated the patient and family who were labeled "difficult" with the utmost respect. She is a true DAISY Nurse for her amazing kindness.
