It is challenging to single out one doctor or nurse at the Mayo Clinic, as they are all wonderful, but I would like to draw special attention to Nurse Michelle. As we all know, cancer is a very scary and difficult disease to handle, but throughout all my treatments and recovery, she was a true lifeline who helped me through it all and may have saved my life on more than one occasion. I live five hours south of Rochester, so calls and messages were vital to my success and recovery. Michelle was so kind, professional, and supportive that she became like a member of my family. She would discuss all the hard topics and listen to my boring stories, giving me the confidence that I could win the battle. She was patient with me, but also very direct when necessary. One evening, she called me when she received my daily blood work to let me know my numbers were crashing after a particularly tough chemo treatment. Of course, I was exhausted and just wanted to sleep. She stated that I needed to go to the emergency room immediately for a blood transfusion, but I whined that I was tired and would go in the morning. Michelle was very professional, but she finally ordered me to crawl off my couch and get to the ER. The risk of heart attack and stroke was extremely high, which I did not understand. I truly believe she saved my life, or at a minimum, saved me from damaging my heart and brain. Despite my problems, they are nothing compared to those of many other unfortunate families; I have a blessed life. I am so grateful to Michelle, and I'm also happy that other patients have the true blessing of having Michelle on their side. You have a fantastic employee!
